Yūrei-zu - Japanese Ghost Painting

This 2-day workshop introduces students to the history and imagery of Japanese yūrei-zu—paintings and prints depicting ghosts. Students will learn traditional Japanese ink-painting techniques.

Drawing inspiration from historical examples and Japanese folklore, each student will develop and complete a master copy ink painting of a supernatural figure.

Taught by Dane Hiʻipoi Nakama, a Japanese-Uchinanchu ceramicist and educator from Oʻahu whose art often explores themes of cultural hybridity, settler colonialism, indigeneity, and ancestral knowledge. Nakama is currently teaching at POT and UCLA.
